MQ separates nearest-count selection from the residual it leaves
Nearest-count selection and the residual used in the charge construction have separate definitions.
· Recorded source version · Retrospective release
CHICAGO — The fine-structure construction selects a nearest whole-unit marker from half of its interaction parameter. Half of a parameter near 84.60055 selects forty-two. MQ’s current notation uses floor and ceiling brackets for that operation rather than the retired rounding acronym.
Figure 1 summarizes the source result and its evidentiary scope.

Marker and charge residual are different quantities
Selecting a whole-unit marker does not set every subsequent residual to zero. The charge construction contains a separate small residual with its own definition. Confusing that residual with the forty-two marker changes the polynomial inputs and the physical role assigned to each quantity.
The continuously expressed interaction parameter is a realized encoding of count geometry. Its noninteger numerical value does not assert that a primitive configuration contains a fractional fundamental unit. The integer marker and the continuous representation occupy different stages of the construction.
The October source records these distinctions to make the numerical procedure reproducible. The result is a source-defined count-selection rule, not an independent measurement of a universal forty-two-unit distance. Its use in charge or coupling calculations remains conditional on the complete realization prescription and upstream calibration.
