A four-cell count test restricts universal norm-preserving phase updates
A universal positive conservative four-cell linear rule admits only the four quarter-turn unit phases.

CHICAGO — source review records a conditional obstruction for a proposed four-cell count realization. A fixed conservative nonnegative linear rule acting on every count configuration cannot induce an arbitrary norm-preserving complex phase. Under the stated construction, the allowed unit multipliers are the four quarter-turn phases.

Arbitrary phases require additional structure
The proof uses the convex geometry of the four cycle phases. A transformed single-cell phase is a convex combination of those four values. Their convex hull meets the unit circle only at its vertices, which gives the restricted set of multipliers.
Non-quarter-turn norm-preserving factors therefore require additional structure, such as a restricted state domain, nonlinear count dependence, coherent extra data, or a larger realization. A partial collective construction does not become a universal linear count automorphism merely by reproducing selected phase updates.
This source result narrows one proposed route from positive conserved counts to continuous quantum evolution. It does not prove that every MQ realization is impossible. The October 23 date identifies the source version recorded in source review. It does not establish the original discovery day or a historical announcement.
